PROMOTING ENERGY EFFICIENCY IN THE PACIFIC (PHASE 2)
BACKGROUND
In a consultation process, conducted in 2007 on behalf of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Pacific Alliance for Sustainability, five Pacific developing member countries – the Cook Islands, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Samoa, Tonga, and Vanuatu – expressed keen interest in, and assigned high priority to, reducing their consumption of fossil fuels.
In response, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved regional technical assistance (TA) for Promoting Energy Efficiency in the Pacific (PEEP) to provide preliminary assistance to assess the potential for reducing fossil fuel consumption in these five DMCs through demand-side energy efficiency activities as power generation is a prime use for the petroleum imported into the region. The PEEP will be implemented in two phases, focusing on identifying a pipeline of specific energy efficiency projects for funding or co-financing by ADB, GEF and other sources. Phase 1 was concluded in May 2011 and the International Institute for Energy Conservation (IIEC) – Asia, was selected as the Technical Assistance Consultants for the implementation of Phase 2.
The Phase 2 project commenced on 6 November 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by 5 November 2014.
